AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas House overwhelmingly approved a bill Tuesday rescinding Gov. Rick Perry's order mandating that Texas girls be given a vaccine against a virus that can cause cervical cancer.

A bill by Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, was tentatively passed 119-21, well over the two-thirds needed to overturn a veto by the governor. The bill will be up for final approval in the House Wednesday and then has to be approved by the Senate.

The rebuke was driven largely by Perry's Republican colleagues, who have almost uniformly criticized the order for the last six weeks, charging that it usurps parental authority.

This is an example of the sick, fucking poisoned culture we live in. The far right love to talk their fucking jaws off about this supposed culture war every time a cross is removed from someone's lawn or a flag is burned, but here we are. After whipping up outrage over video games, mtv, condoms, sex education, homosexuals, the vagina monologues and everything else under the sun that involves sex rather than violence, here we see Dennis Bonnen explaining to us simpletons that our daughters don't need vaccinations to sit behind a desk. Because as we all know, kids go to school and come home and don't have human contact until they are 30 or so and we as parents are ready for them to have sex. Hell, using that logic we should go ahead and eliminate all other vaccines that don't involve pencil or desk related diseases.

Study after study has shown, that even back in the forties and thirties, around 90+ percent of the population have participated in pre-marital sex. In short, people fuck, get used to it. To act like cervical cancer is just punishment for any sexual indiscretion, let alone one that over 9 out of 10 people commit is callous, unrealistic and selfish.

Don't even fucking try and hit me with any bullshit false science, because I've researched it. The strains of HPV that are targeted with the vaccine are the primary cause of cervical cancer in the western world. Thousands of women are going to die because we didn't want our kids fucking around. You can't even make a fiscal argument soundly because the cost of the burden of thousands of unnecessary cancer cases on the medical system outweighs the relatively small cost of vaccination.

Anyone who didn't support this is crazy or an asshole. I'd wish some horrible disease on you, but it wouldn't be right to think that someone deserves that no matter what they did wrong, right?

Think about this for a second, 9 other cities have the same devices, so either their security is even more lax, or more likely they didn't go crazy over a bunch of novelty items.

Newscasters keep insisting that 9/11 changed everything when covering this story, and I'm starting to believe the line. We're living in a different world now, a world full of people that seem to be getting dumber by the day. That's the only change I see.

It has been discovered that Alaska's illustrious asshole senator Ted Stevens was the mystery man that (in the middle of the night) blocked a bill to create a searchable database of government contracts to add some transparency to these deals.

I wonder why the same man that provided us with a wonderful 200 million dollar bridge to an island with a population of less than 50 people would do something like that? God knows Halliburton and KBR would grind to a halt if it were ever placed under something as horrifying as public scrutiny.

Probably the funniest part of all this is that they found out who it was by asking a hundred senators if they were the culprit, and only Ted Stevens didn't deny it.

Assault charges have been pressed against Mr. Asshole golfer from the last post. He's not answering his phone or his door, so it looks like he might be arrested. Yay.

Also in the schadenfreude department, Dan Lacey, the creator of the webcomic faithmouse has gotten himself into severe debt by reportedly not having a bloody job and spending all his free time posting to messageboards and somehow managing to pump out a whole two or three comics a week.

My brother gets attacked at a golf course.

Ok, so my brother (who is around 18) is at this golf course. Golf is a major part of his life, and he wants more than anything to be a professional. He usually plays at a lesser course because we don't have a lot of money, but in this instance he had won passes in a tournament so he was playing in a fairly hoity toity course.

Anyway, there's a guy playing behind him for quite awhile and he has someone playing right in front of him. Normal situation at a busy course as far as I know (also, I should mention I know nothing about golf personally) when this guy starts demanding that he be able to play through. My brother explains that he's only playing as fast as he can, and that even if he played through he wouldn't be getting anywhere.

Some words were exchanged, but if I know my brother (and I do) he was as courteous as he could be. This guy literally attacks him as his girlfriend, not knowing what else to do records this. The video explains better than I do.

The middle east isn't going to get any better until somebody in that fight smartens up a bit and decides to become the grownup. Until just recently, I thought that was going to be Isreal.

For a brief, wonderful moment, it seemed as if Isreal had finally come to the realization that their problems aren't going to solved by continued reliance on their superior military. You know, that same one America seems to be coming to.

Instead, now it looks like we're in for more of the same. Even Al Queda, who would normally never bother interfering with this have promised to get involved. Just further evidence of the result of those kind of tactics- further radicalization of the various muslim communities.

Isreal is currently attempting to buy time before a cease fire deal, so they have longer to conduct military operations, more time to kill more people which basically guarantees more people with nothing to live for other than Isreal's destruction. Which probably works out well, because then Isreal will have a whole new, even more radical movement to use as their excuse to invade again, some years from now.

There was a time when a person like me would listen and contemplate over weather or not the latest controversy surrounding the New York Times printing their story about the US spying on terror funding was actually a danger to American lives.

Putting aside the fact that Bush himself and the policies of his little organization are the greatest danger to innocent lives for a moment, I no longer give the White house any credibility on using national security and state secrecy responsibly. Just recently we learned that Libby’s lawyer is requesting a delay in trial, reminding us of another leak that didn’t seem to raise the ire of Commander Codpiece so much.

From fluctuating terror alert levels to questionably timed announcements and arrests, they’ve given up the benefit of the doubt for everything from national security to healthcare.

Which brings me to the last and most important area in which Bush and company have lost the moral authority on, torture and humane treatment of detainees. Back on the twentieth of this month, the two American soldiers that were kidnapped by terrorists three days earlier were found, dead, tortured and decapitated, laid out with booby traps all over them. A tragedy made all the more horrible when you realize that America has found itself guilty of similar offences recently. I realize that no one has been decapitated in American custody, but many have died, beaten, with broken bones, suffocated. Not to mention the nasty little numbers they approved because they don’t classify detainees as POW’s or even subject to the Geneva conventions.

I had a little talk with the nutcases over at LGF about all this a little while ago, near the very bottom of the thread, please head over there and check it out if you have a second, I was mad then, and I usually say things more effectively when I first type it out.

As a side note, the supreme court decided today that the government cannot use military tribunals to sentence all the alleged terrorists in custody. This is a big step for the rule of law but more importantly it implies that the US should consider the detainees as subject to common article 3 of the Geneva conventions, which stipulate that prisoners "shall in all circumstances be treated humanely," not tortured or mistreated and not subject to "outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment.". Huge news, hopefully the Bush administration will adhere to the letter of the law, but I’d say they gave up their credibility on that one too, quite awhile ago in fact.

So this is how fucking sick and gullible the American military seems to think we all are. Three men kill themselves in Guantanamo Bay and the camp commander calls it "an act of asymmetric warfare waged against us".

Just sit back and breathe that in for a minute.

One of the men was due to be freed; likely another of the countless Iraqi's detained for little or no reason. They had previously all taken part in the hunger strikes and they were all force fed by the military. They left suicide notes, but we don't get to know anything about their content. Probably just more jihadi propaganda anyway, right?

Just when exactly, did Canada and Britain start working off the GOP playbook? Which way was I looking when Steven Harper banned the media from documenting returning casualties from abroad, when he began hand picking the questions he was to be asked by the press? When he gave up Canada’s position as an international leader in the Kyoto talks?

Who allowed the new English anti terror laws that allow the jailing of any person for days without cause and allow authors to be jailed if they are seen to be glorifying terrorism?

I watched the results the entire night during the last election, nearly every count in every riding, about 2/3rd’s of voters voted for left of center parties, but because of Canada’s multi party system and antiquated non transferable vote counting, in went the conservatives.

We know what this is all about. This is America getting what it wants from Canada again, come to think of it, the Kyoto waffling came around the same time Canada became the largest foreign supplier of crude to the USA.

I am sick and tired of this shit, the government is supposed to be working at the pleasure of the people, but time and time again the money wins out over popular opinion or logic. I will be writing letters, talking to people and blogging about it until you are thrown out and replaced by someone who won’t put the economy and America higher on the agenda than the environment and our Canadian Values.

A glimmer of hope

A lot of the time, the lags between my posts have to do with my fatigue, or despair at the headlines. There hasn’t been much reason for me to smile at the news over the last few years.

Today I woke up, sick as a dog and called in to work, turned on the TV and got my first hope in years for the future of America. Like mostly all sane decisions to come out lately, it comes to us from the courts. Zacarias Moussaoui has been sentenced to life in prison, ruling out the death penalty for the government’s boogeyman.

The jury no doubt saw Moussaoui for what he was, a mentally disturbed terrorist wannabe, which is remarkable taking into account the noise created by the prosecution and the government.

And watch the nut job heads explode.

China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and… the United States. Those four countries are responsible for 94% of executions in the world. I may be inherently biased, because I believe that the death penalty isn’t applicable in any case, but is this really the company these right wingers want to keep?

If they really want to send a message to terrorists worldwide, maybe they should put some effort into tracking down those actually responsible for the attacks.

I'm a regular at Something Awful, which is, in my opinion probably the best humour site on the net, and I stumbled across this thread which claims to reveal many of the disgusting personal secrets of the higher-ups in the Whitehouse.

I realize most of this is incredible and unverifiable, but is it really that much more unbelievable than the answers that come out of Scotty during press conferences?

I, despite my inherent skepticism for these sorts of things, find myself sort of believing it, it just has a ring of truth to it, especially the bit about Cheney being drunk when he shot the lawyer and the bit about Tom Ridge being totally OCD. It explains the duct tape thing that I named the blog after as an homage to him, anyway.

Is it just me, or is Bush looking more and more haggard every day? Seriously, if the man weren’t responsible for as many dead bodies as he is, I’d feel sorry for him.

Could it be the crash and burn approval ratings? The loss of support from his own base? A fierce and focused democratic opponent? (Just kidding on that last one…)

Tom Delay? Iraq? Immigration? No, I think something else has him soiling his suit. Another wonderful demonstration of the worst case scenario situations that seem to keep coming up with this guy. I have to admit, I’m surprised. I wouldn’t have given him enough rope to hang himself in the first place, but I never would have believed he would have the propensity for colossal fuck ups he’s proven he does. But that’s me, I’m still amazed he’s been permitted to go as far as he has, let alone been allowed to leave the house or eat a pretzel without a specially designed helmet.

All they see right now in the white house is a smart, focused, no bullshit prosecutor that believes in the system and the rule of law asking a lot of questions, and expecting answers even! I can smell them shitting themselves from here, Bush and company don’t “do” that whole answering questions truthfully thing.

I look forward to documenting the self-destruction of his legacy and following. It has already started, Some people are just more polite about how they tell him to fuck off.

Supreme asshole Justice Scalia flips off liberals in church, taking a break from prejudging cases of detainee rights in the government's favour at speaking engagements.

Time for a little "I've been gone forever because my work banned blogger.com and I'm too lazy to do this in my own time" roundup!

It looks like that fellow I wrote about in my last real post has been released and all it took were the efforts and protests of Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy and Sweden, as well as Pope Benedict XVI, George Bush, Karzai and Condi Rice. Also, a cited lack of evidence and testimony that the defendant was "mentally disturbed" and unfit for trial.

And now he only needs to deal with fundamentalist dicktrees that want him dead and finding asylum.

My only question here is, will Heaven and Earth come together again the next time to pull the fat from the fire? The Afghan government has made it painfully clear that they do not accept or tolerate even the existence of other religions, so what's to stop this shit from happening next week to someone else? Will they continue to stone women to death on accusation of adultery? Will the pope weigh in on that one too? Is this the kind of "free and democratic government" we can expect to see in Iraq?

Islamic fundamentalists and Sharia law have no place crafting criminal law, just as evangelicals have no place telling any of us how to fuck, who to fuck or why to fuck. They like to think they do, but I've got one word for them "Vaffanculo!"

Americablog writer John Aravosis has a few words for the liberals that he says are hurting their own party with hatred for the concept of money, power and privilege.

Hate to play devil's advocate, and I usually agree with John on most issues, but there is something to be said for money and power overstepping its bounds.

I'm sorry but the outrage that causes some readers to (fairly or unfairly) make calls to you to account for your donations and the like comes from the same seething anger most liberals have for tax cuts that benefit the richest 1% while poor kids die in a war of choice or buried in a coal mine that ignored safety regulations for years.

It's the same anger that's directed at the corrupt, pension stealing higher-ups at Enron, the CEO's of companies that give them hundreds of millions of dollars while they run the company into the ground, and they still feel the need to charge outrageous amounts to the company expense account. The same anger we feel when a company is allowed to continue to pollute and destroy the environment because the fines are a slap on the wrist.

It's the same anger felt by those of us that need gasoline to work and live, and see the price go up in leaps and bounds while crude goes down, and big oil rakes in record profits across the board, those of us who need affordable healthcare or daycare and aren't getting it.

It's the same anger I felt when I saw Bush or one of his cronies stand up at a dinner and declare to scattered laughter that it was nice to see their base come out and support them, the rich and the richer.

That is (most times) a justified and a righteous anger, and one that could serve the Democratic Party well if they learned to use it.

Lastly, I think all the fund drive shit can get pretty excessive on that site. It *is* free hosting after all, and there are people I'd donate to long before I would John.

On the other side of the coin, to all those readers who complained about his picture with Katherine Harris, and him saying that she's a nice person, cut John some slack there, there's nothing wrong with acting civilly towards even your largest opponents. Remember, we aren't supposed to be the side that goes around calling people traitors for no reason.

It looks like Afghanistan has finally come full circle, they're expecting a bumper crop of opium this year, the Taliban is making a comeback in border areas of Pakistan, there are rumblings of a renewed insurgency, and they're holding a trial to sentence a person to death for being a Christian.

And this is the "success" story that's come out of the global war on terror. It does demonstrate, however, once again, that a poorly thought out war on a concept, employing the use of overwhelming force isn't an effective mechanism to bring about positive change. War on drugs, anyone?

Beyond my opposition to the Iraq war on it's moral and logistical basis, there lies a much bigger reason why this was the wrong war at the wrong time, and that is simply because Afghanistan needed us more. They needed us there for the long haul, the big and the small, and our attention was simply elsewhere, the media and the white house had found it's next big adventure, and Bin Laden was all but forgotten.

I think it's ironic that the poppy is widely regarded as a symbol for the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women that fought for freedom in World War 2, while these days it seems more a symbol of the futility of our current struggle to force feed democracy to the middle east at the barrel of a gun.

I was leaving some comments at a right leaning blog when I saw a thread asking about the bird flu and weather or not this is some sort of "Media Hype". If I've misrepresented anything, could any of you sciencey types correct me?

It’s not exactly rocket science. It’s really allot like playing the lottery.

Humans have no natural immunities against bird flu; the only saving grace right now is that it is very hard for us to catch.

However, viruses often mutate. They also exchange genetics with other virii. If, for instance an absolutely worst case scenario occurs, and the virus hits a metaphorical jackpot (maintaining it’s deadliness and virulence while gaining the ability to spread as easily as the annual flu), it could grind civilization to a halt. The costs to businesses alone would be immeasurable. The number of dead another lottery of circumstance, anywhere from single digit millions to a billion.

Then again, maybe not. Or maybe not so much, as it were. That’s the trouble about how much to worry about it. Ebola and other hemorrhagic fevers could be the same or much worse (Ebola kills 9 of 10).

I’d certainly recommend taking the threat seriously, if for no other reason than the fact that they can also be used as weapons. Doesn’t take much to incubate any of this and then attempt to release it if a dangerous enough idiot gets their hands on it.

If any of that happens, it’s going to make the threat of anthrax, insurgencies, conventional terrorism, even a single nuke combined seem tame.

Ok, so this is how long blogger hasn't been working for me, I wrote a post about Ali Shalal Qaissi, the supposed individual behind the hood, being shocked in that infamous abu garib picture. I wrote the post on the tenth, I've since been unable to post until now, and convieniently enough, the whole story seems to have been Made up anyway. . So here I am still with nothing to post.

So promises all around that I'll get something up on here before the clock strikes midnight, and curses to Blogger, who will stop receiving my payments of unicorn farts and fairy dust for hosting my blog if they don't shape up.

Hope I haven't disappointed the fifteen or so people that regularly visit. (5 of which are likely me with different IP addresses)

"This is what we were trained to do, and this is what we did. I was not the only one; there were many others hitting them."

A day after my post on the kind of people that are being held in detention in the "War on terror", CBS ran a story that tries to make sense of detainee deaths while in custody.

Another point I've brought up repeatedly when arguing these sorts of points with war supporters is that when you tell your soldiers that the Geneva conventions do not apply, and when you fail to set specific rules about what is tolerable and not tolerable, you get this:

Their shackled hands, according to Brand, were at about eye level. The point of chaining them to the ceiling, Brand says, was to keep the detainees awake by not letting them lie down and sleep.

Interrogators wanted the prisoners softened up.

Asked what the longest period of time Brand saw a detainee chained like that, Brand says, "Probably about two days."

"Two days? Without a break?" Pelley asked.

"Without a break," Brand replied.

Brand says something else was thought to be acceptable in the prison: a brutal way of controlling prisoners – a knee to the common peroneal nerve in the leg, a strike with so much force behind it that the prisoner would lose muscle control and collapse in pain.

Brand says he vaguely remembers giving knee strikes to Habibullah.

How did the detainee react to that?

"The same way everybody else did. I mean he would scream out 'Allah, Allah, Allah'; sometimes his legs would buckle and sometimes it wouldn’t," Brand explained.

It wasn't only Willie Brand. A confidential report by the Army’s criminal investigation division accuses dozens of soldiers of abuse, including "slamming [a prisoner] into walls [and a] table," "forcing water into his mouth until he could not breathe," giving "kicks to the groin" and once, according to the report, a soldier "threatened to rape a male detainee." Soldiers even earned nicknames including "King of Torture" and "Knee of Death."

The military medical examiner says Dilawar’s legs were pulpified. Both autopsy reports were marked "homicide." But the Army spokesman in Afghanistan told the media that both men had died of natural causes.

There was a lot the Red Cross didn’t know. Medical experts say that Dilawar’s injuries were so severe that, if he had lived, both his legs would have required amputation. Even worse, one soldier testified that most of the interrogators thought Dilawar had been arrested only because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. They had come to believe he was just a cab driver.

Sound like anyone we know? Maybe an apple seller or a farmer perhaps?

Well, this is a grand tragedy, but certainly this isn't the fault of the generals and leaders... I mean, it's not like they knew what the hell was going on right?

"Several of my leaders knew because we had them like that, you know, there was probably one or two like that any given day. And we didn’t change the procedure if someone came through whether they were a colonel or a general, we left them the same. They seen (sic) what was going on there," Beiring answered.

Pelley asked Brand if other leaders knew what was going on.

Gen. Daniel McNeill, the top officer in Afghanistan, said “we are not chaining people to the ceilings.”

Brand disagreed. "Well, he’s lying obviously. I mean because we were doing it on a daily basis," he says.

I really hate to just copy and paste without comment, but this is one of those stories that pretty much stands for itself. Create the mess and then let the trigger men catch the heat. Sacrifice the grunts to save the brass.

I'm in the midst of writing a much longer and more involved post for later today or tomorrow, but I saw this story come off the wire and just had to say something about it.

I don't know how many dozens of times I've heard a Bush apologist say something along the lines of "Everyone in Gitmo is a terrorist, and they deserve to be there, besides, it's not that bad at all. They get lemon chicken..."

I think we can go past the "It's not that bad" excuse, not only because of the torture and the hunger strikes and the bloody and painful forced feedings but simply because it's a jail. People are housed there in cages, kept away from their homes and families, with no personal freedom. It's nearly the worst thing the system can come up with to do with domestic criminals, so it's probably pretty high up there on the list of nasty things that can be done to terrorists.

Now, with the release of new documents and names, we can begin pulling apart the other rationale. I've long contended that it's only natural that the military would be a little overzealous in deciding who is and who isn't a terrorist in a war zone filled with potentials, I don't blame them for that.

What I do take issue with is that the American government simply rounds these people up and puts them away somewhere convenient, never informing them of their charge, and simply forgets about them. I'm obviously not saying that no one being detained right now is affiliated with Al Quaida, but I believe that a great many, perhaps the majority of prisoners held are not "enemy combatants" and are likely no threat at all. Excepting, of course, the threat created when a friend or family member of one of these detainees decides that America is the devil for taking this farmer or that student away under suspicion of being involved with "them".

From an apple seller who says he was kidnapped to be a cook's helper for the taliban, a group he says he had never even heard of before he was kidnapped:

"I never had a weapon. I never carried a weapon with me and I've never been in any kind of armed fight,"

The evidence against others can seem flimsy. In at least one case, it appears to include only the fact that the suspect wore a Casio watch _ a brand allegedly favored by terrorists for use as bomb timers.

Shah, a farmer who said he had never left his village before being arrested because he wore an olive drab jacket.

"I was just walking in the street and I was captured," Shah said. "The next thing I found out is that I am sitting here."

Are these the kinds of terrorists that you picture in your mind's eye when Bush stands behind that podium and promises to keep this war going for as long as he sees fit, an apple seller and a farmer?

I was having trouble thinking of a way to end this, but I'll go back to that apple vendor, whose fate is (as the article notes) completely unknown as he was not named in the transcript, I think he's got a good handle on it.

"I always knew America as a democratic country and always heard positive things about America," he told the tribunal. "I believe that after 9/11 America became very aggressive and that's probably the only reason I'm here."

A simple question, how far will the Iraq debacle disintegrate before all the pro war drum beaters start to shut up and listen to the people who haven't been wrong about nearly everything for the last 6 years?

As the death toll rolls on past 350 for this week, Bush will be visiting India to try and sell a nuclear power deal. In doing so, I find myself wondering if he'll have a chance to get a glimpse at the more impoverished areas of India. The kind of unfathomable poverty that us westerners simply do not understand or register as existing in a civilized country. The funny thing is that India's going through a supposed economic boom, fuelled by tech industries and outsourcing, but the income disparity is brutal; the same kind of vast divide that is widening in America as we speak.

I wonder if he'll see one of the families that live their entire life in a garbage dump, collecting scraps of material to sell for the ten dollars or less a week they live on, only minutes after passing a few of India's new economic winners. I also wonder if Bush will ask himself if his 250 billion dollar war in Iraq could have been money well spent elsewhere, especially now as his poll numbers waver into the low thirties and his war of choice degenerates further.

I'm a realist, so I doubt it. I don't even really think Bush makes those connections anymore. If he ever did...

Sorry about the lack of posts lately, the sheer number of issues to write about has me a little stunned. I'm starting to think that Bush is just never going to get what's coming to him, regardless of what he does to America and it's people.

Anyways, I felt it was time for a little fun, or horror depending on how you look at it. This Freeper thread, entitled: Making Islam illegal -- is it the West's only choice?" is probably the most ill-informed and disgusting thread I've ever seen on any conservative site. Even the traditional conservatives are sickened by the commentary of others. From the featured article:

So, the question becomes are we at that time now? Are we fast approaching a time when Mosques will be closed and banned? Have we come to a time when Islamic literature is turned away from our borders? Have the childish and dangerous reactions of Muslims to this cartoon in a Danish newspaper proven that Islam cannot be trusted to be a vital, peaceful, and law-abiding segment of society?

It is looking like yes is the answer to these queries.

Naturally, most of the readership of Free Republic agrees:

In 1836 Missouri's govenor issued an extermination order against all Mormons in Missouri, based on nothing more than lies and innuendo.

The federal government at the time said nothing about this order being unconstitutional. To the contrary, the federal government was complicit and a willing participant in the actions against the Mormons.

Several years later when the Mormons were in the Utah terrirtory they sent an army to "keep an eye" on them.

Why can't we now do at least the same to a "religious" group that has a proven track record of violence and terrorism?

Whittington got discharged from the hospital early and gets right up onto a stage and basically says the equivalent of "Thank you sir, may I have another?" Click here for the NYT story and take a good look at that face of his. Then try to imaging saying this about the man that shot you:

"My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney has had to go through this past week," Mr. Whittington said today. "We send our love and respect to them as they deal with situations that are much more serious than what we've had this week."

Mr. Whittington said of the vice president, "We hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves."

Why don't you tickle his balls while you're down there Harry?

He continues on to say that the incident is not easy to explain to those of us who aren't familiar with "the great sport of quail hunting". Oh yes, that wonderful, magical "sport" of canned hunting which involves the shooting of hundreds of birds that were born and raised in cages specifically to be released and act as targets for bored, rich assholes.

Seriously, these birds have never flown before and they don't regard humans as any sort of threat (in fact they associate humans with feeding time and are likely to be drawn to them rather than away). So basically you can just trounce through the bush, blasting away defenseless animals left and right until you feel like enough of a man. Cheney's no stranger to these kind of "hunts". I looked up some other hunting trips and Cheney has been recorded as bagging 70 pheasants in one day, then lunch, followed by a new hunt after releasing penned mallard duck.

Anyone who could participate in a hunt like that is a soulless coward.

America to Katrina victims: "Go away, you aren't our problem anymore"

I just wanted to do my small part to keep the Katrina battered south coast in the public eye today as the cut-off for federal aid looms near and permanent housing arrangements haven’t been worked out for many.

"All I got is a couple pairs of pants and some shirts. The pressure is on," said Jonathan Gautier, 26, one of the six, who was also carrying a single plastic bag filled with clothes.”

"As he moved out his belongings, Melvin Robinson, 40, said he did talk to a FEMA representative by phone and was told he didn't qualify for an extension of his hotel stay because the agency is paying apartment rent for his family in Dallas, and wouldn't support two residences for the family. Robinson, a Regional Transit Authority bus driver, said he must be in New Orleans to keep his job but has no place to bring his family. "When I tried to get an extension, the FEMA lady on the phone, she was so unruly, she said, 'That's not my problem,'..."Everybody says 'Come back, come back.' There's no place for us to stay," he said.

Issues about which areas to rebuild and which to demolish are still being worked out and many of the promised trailers and other, more permanent housing solutions are caught up in red tape.

On a personal level, I was never surprised with the often appalling conduct of America’s war in Iraq. The American government (especially the current administration) has shown time and time again that its support of foreign democracies and peoples tends to be selective at best, but to treat their own citizens this way reaches a new low.

I don’t often give to disaster charities, not because of conviction, more often because I’m hardly making ends meet myself but I did donate to Katrina relief. I spent as much as I could afford with that one, giving to the Red Cross about 3 days after the hurricane because I knew right away that Bush was going to treat this one like he does nearly everything else, just look away and hope everyone forgets.

The gulf coast needs a distinct plan for recovery, not more empty promises and platitudes, and watching Bush talk about Iraq in the SOTU (while spending less than a minute on the gulf coast) after all these years of mixed results and outright failure, I realized that’s all he has…

I must have gotten 3 emails from worldnetdaily yesterday (don't let them have your email address, they're worse than porn sites) with this story as the headline or lead story.

Go ahead, read it. Look at the screencap that WND took, absorb it all. Then try to imagine having the same reaction to that simple marketing campaign as Ian Millar.

Now everyone, pay attention: If you decide to use the non abbreviated form of "I'm", you are also deciding to spend your everlasting afterlife in the burning cesspool of hell! God said it folks, not me.

I wonder if it even occurred to these geniuses that "I am" is re-arrangement of the letters "AIM" which just so happens to be the thing they're hocking. I wonder what it must be like to go through life, finding hideous blasphemy everywhere and not even considering other, more benign and coincidental possibilities.

I've got news for this guy, in Canada, we've had a beer company (rhymes with Nolson) that operates in the states that used "I am" as their slogan for the past 5 years. Nobody complained at the time, nobodies complaining now. Get a life.

I have major work to do, likely pulling an all nighter out of town, so no blogging tonight. Unless when I come back at some ungodly hour in the morning I manage to type something legible before I crash on the nearest available surface.

I did however want to mention something that has me a little worried about the condition of the other half of blog land or the blogosphere or whatever stupid thing it's called this week. It seems that one of the right wing sites I comment at frequently has gotten a new contributor that has seen fit to retroactively edit some comments I had left.

It wasn't anything substantive that was changed, just petty little changes to make me look stupid, if you look at the comments it's fairly obvious where the other "Author" has made his mark.

Little stuff, I know, but that's about the only thing I won't tolerate from bloggers, it's the height of dishonesty to misuse the small amount of power you are afforded as a blog writer.

Enough bitching, more than anything, I just want to go on record saying that as long as I maintain a site like this, I will allow comments from all commentators, of all ideologies, with any opinion, and I will not edit, alter, delete, or in any way modify any comments made to this blog save for deleting spam and the rare occurrence of someone requesting that I remove their own comment.

I will also not be banning anyone, for any reason except spamming.

There may not be anyone here, but goddamit, anyone that does come shouldn't have to worry about that sort of douchbaggery. I know my political views can be extreme to some people, but not so extreme that I'm unwilling to argue the merits of it or any other view like an intelligent human being. I've been distracted recently by this game: Emily Enough. Lots of people don’t game but anyone can play this one, It’s totally free, it’s point and click, and there aren’t really any time limits as far as I know, so it’s about the most leisurely game experience possible. Play this game. (Warning: Mature topics, blah, blah, blah)

I don’t know much (or anything, really) about the creator, but major respect for releasing a quality game for free to the masses. Incidentally, the site that hosts the file is a really amazing archive of free games, check it out if you’re a gamer.

Those of you with children may want to avert their eyes…

Today we take a look into the seamy underbelly of internet comment threads. Little green footballs is quite the sight, quite the sight indeed. Nearly any thread you click on will reveal the madness of it’s members. No, seriously, try to find a thread without some sort of clearly offensive or inflammatory statement. It’s like a scavenger hunt, except the only prize is your own horror! Let’s take a look!

I see this recurring theme often, the whole "If yer don't agree, yer can get the HEEELLL OUT!" schtick, even to the extent of them setting up donation funds for "sending them home". I assume that's if you're not native to America, but for many on LGF, it's all good. Pretty sad worldview some people have.
